The Government retracts and will allow DJ performances in the Balearic Islands
The Executive modifies its agreement of May 21 to consider these activities as a «live cultural show»
The Balearic Government has backed down after the controversial ban on DJ performances on the islands and has modified the document published in the BOIB on May 22, which did not allow this type of electronic music activities. In a new official document, the regional executive retracts and partially modifies the agreement to now consider that the performance of a ‘disc jockey’ «is considered a live cultural show», so its activity is allowed within the conditions established, such as not being able to eat or drink in closed spaces with this type of musical performances.
The ‘deejays’ of Ibiza had put themselves on the warpath against the Balearic Government after the publication in the BOIB on May 22 of the agreement of the Government Council that prohibits the performances of DJs throughout the autonomous community. This is one of the measures adopted in the new Plan of prevention measures to face the health crisis caused by the covid.
The General Directorate of Emergencies and Interior argues its decision that «the performance of a DJ is an entertainment activity by mechanical or electronic means typical of a party room, dance hall, café-concert, disco, and cocktail bar.» «It cannot be considered either background music or live music, therefore it is an activity that is not allowed under current regulations,» adds the official document, which specifies that only live music is allowed or without exceeding 60 decibels.
Representatives of the electronic music of the island have shouted in the sky before this agreement of the regional Executive and assure that this decision could lead to an unprecedented crisis in a sector that, they remember, has been in dry dock for more than a year for the harsh restrictions imposed in the Balearic Islands. «They want to take advantage of the situation to end electronic music. They have put their foot on our neck and they do not stop pressing», has assured a well-known Dj from Ibiza who prefers to wait to know all the details of this measure to express himself freely. This same artist affirms that in the last days the police have already demanded in different establishments that the DJs desist from performing, and that they were only allowed to play music «with ‘pen drives'».
Meanwhile, Joan Ribas, deejay and former councilor of Vila, had shared with his professional colleagues a possible rectification by the Ministry of the Presidency. According to Ribas’ information, the document published in the BOIB would be the interpretation of one of the technicians, different from the real will of the Government regarding musical activity, so they expected an imminent rectification, which has finally occurred.
Before the amendment, the BOIB publication specified that «the activity of the establishments that carry out the activities of a party room, dance hall, concert café, disco and cocktail bar is suspended» and that the performance of a DJ » It cannot be considered either background music or live music, so it is an activity that is not allowed under current regulations «.
